Named GP

Everybody that registers with a GP Practice in England needs to have a named GP, who is largely responsible for the patient; NHS England states this will mean: "a named, accountable GP for all patients (including children) who will take lead responsibility for the co-ordination of all appropriate services required under the contract."

This of course does not include occurrences where another GP is seen-in this instance the GP that was seen is responsible for that treatment, but the Named GP will be made aware of the decisions made and any course of medications given. The Named GP will receive any documentation or letters from other healthcare facilities, such as hospitals, relating to the patient and will co-ordinate their overall treatment.

As part of the Detailed Care Record Practices need to ensure that their patients are aware of who their Named GP is, to ensure better continuity of care. This does not mean that you are obligated to see only this GP, merely that the GP in question will be overseeing your transition through Primary Care. 

When registering with the Practice, you will be allocated a Named GP and made aware of who this will be. Again, you will not be obligated to see this GP and are free to see any of our GPs during any treatment that you may receive. By and large we try to register families with the same GP to ensure continuity of care across its members, and it can also allow a familiarity to grow in a patient- doctor relationship.
